Montserrat

The Montserrat Sanctuary is located just 60 kilometers from Barcelona, nestled in Catalonia’s most iconic mountain and surrounded by an incredible environment that attracts over two million visitors each year.

The sanctuary’s origins date back to 888, in the chapel of Santa María, where, according to legend, the Virgin appeared to some shepherd boys. Later, Oliba, the bishop of Vic, built the monastery at the chapel of Santa María. Additionally, its name comes from the Catalan “Mont” (mountain) and “Serrat” (serrated), referring to the area’s unique topography.
